Produced as part of the faction theatre co.’s THE COMPLETE: SCHILLER
Unfinished at the time of his death, only a fragment of Schiller’s Demetrius exists.
This unique project bridging the gap between classical texts and new writing invites a series of playwrights to take part in an extraordinary ‘chain play’ directed by The Faction’s Associate Director Rachel Valentine Smith and edited by The Faction’s adaptors Daniel Millar and Mark Leipacher.
Using the literal translation of the first act and the rough outlines which Schiller produced for the rest of the drama, each playwright will be assigned a single scene of the drama to write. Starting at the beginning of the play, each writer will produce a new version of their scene before passing the material on to the next writer – over thirty writers will create new versions of Schiller’s proposed scenes to create one cohesive script ready for performance.
This event will span the duration of The Faction’s THE COMPLETE: SCHILLER an ambitious undertaking to translate, adapt, and stage the complete dramatic works of Friedrich Schiller for a modern, English-speaking audience.
ACT ONE was premiered in a rehearsed reading at the New Diorama Theatre on 15th January 2012 with contributions from April de Angelis, Jonathan Brittain, Gareth Jandrell, Rachael McGill and Ché Walker.
The ACT TWO event will take place in September 2012 around the revival of The Faction’s sell-out Mary Stuart with writers to be announced shortly.
