“the course of true love never did run smooth...”
the faction theatre co.’s energetic and physical approach brings to life the majesty of Shakespeare’s most popular comedy.
A Duke and an Amazon celebrate their engagement but can’t persuade Hermia to marry Demetrius. She and Lysander elope, but are pursued by their respective rivals. An amateur dramatics group of local tradesman rehearse the unexpectedly hilarious tale of tragic lovers Pyramus and Thisbe. They all end up in the mystical Athenian woods, where the fairy kingdom is in turmoil: the King and Queen of the fairies are at war over a beautiful Indian boy.
the faction returns to Shakespeare for their landmark 10th production, which also sees the major launch of the company’s outreach campaign, with a series of workshops. This touring production for an ensemble of eight actors opens at the Brockley Jack Studio where the faction is an Associate Company. The show then plays open-air performances in Brockwell Park where the faction production of The Tempest was a sell-out success last year.

- Understanding through performance
After kicking off the session with some fun warm-up games favoured by the cast, this 90-minute long workshop will introduce Shakespeare to our young audience in an accessible and highly enjoyable way. Four key scenes from the play will be written out especially for the children to explore in groups with members of the cast, after which each group will explain the plot of their scene and the characters involved for the rest of the class. At the end of the workshop each group will perform their take on their chosen scene. The Primary workshops have been specifically tailored to enhance your childs’ understanding of the story and the characters of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as improving their teamwork, communication and linguistic skills. It also offers your pupils the chance to see Shakespeare in performance, as well as the opportunity to perform Shakespeare themselves.
WORKSHOP for 11-16yrs
“What hempen home-spuns have we swaggering here, So near the cradle of the faerie queen?”
- Warm-up exercises used by the cast
- How the text works
- Themes and characterisation
- Production
Approaching the text in a practical and refreshing way is vital in developing an understanding of the language and poetry of Shakespeare’s plays. This 90 minute workshop with our actors and education leaders aims to offer a hands-on approach to the play, offering a fresh and inventive path to appreciating the text and bringing Shakespeare to life, whilst simultaneously supporting the theoretical work done in the classroom. After a few brief and energetic warm-up exercises, the workshop leaders will present some excerpts from key scenes of the play to be read out by the participants. Exploring the themes and leitmotifs through the plot will lead us on to characterisation, as each student picks a character from the play and ‘interviewed’ by the rest of the class. The students will then split up into groups – with one student in each group designated as ‘director’ - and be given a scene each to perform for the rest of the class.
