SCHILLER’S UNFINISHED PLAY
Demetrius

A monumental undertaking to translate, adapt, and stage the complete dramatic works of Friedrich Schiller for a modern, English-speaking audience.

Although he is one of the twin titans of German classical literature, along with Goethe, Schiller is sorely neglected within the contemporary British theatre scene. With this unique project The Faction will create new versions of Schiller’s canon, especially designed to cultivate new audiences for his work, including The Demetrius Project, a special scheme to bridge the gap between classical work and new writing and complete a manuscript for Schiller’s final, unfinished play.

Schiller provides the perfect material for The Faction Theatre Co. approach to physicality and storytelling: thrilling plots, featuring a gallery of exciting characters, packed full of gesture and rich visuals, delivered through heightened text that is linguistically delightful, psychologically clear and emotionally real.

Across the nine main house productions and a fascinating programme of supplementary events, we draw together collaborators from the worlds of theatre, art, heritage, science and technology, both professionally and within the local community, with partners from Germany, the UK, Ireland, France and Spain. These contributions ensure the project is both artistically exciting and accessible to the broadest possible spectrum of audiences.
