A ship, a storm, spirits of air and fire, and monsters half-human, half-fish: The Faction use their trademark visual inventiveness to create a magical island the like of which you’ve never seen before in their breathtaking new production.
“The rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance”
Stranded on a forgotten isle for the past twelve years, a powerful magician now seeks revenge on the brother who betrayed him. Two courtiers plot to take the life of a king. A jester and a drunken butler lead a deformed slave in rebellion. As the cycle of violence continues, true love blossoms between the king’s son and the magician’s daughter...
Arguably Shakespeare’s final masterpiece, The Tempest demonstrates the height of his powers, with action, comedy and romance intricately woven into events that take place in real time. The Faction’s energetic and physical approach brings to life the majesty of Shakespeare’s language for seasoned theatregoers and newcomers alike. This will be The Faction’s first production as an Associate Company of the Brockley Jack Theatre where the production opens in April 2010. The Tempest will then return to London for open-air shows at Brockwell Park in June and July before playing final performances in the summer festivals.
“For anyone who doubts Shakespeare’s final play is about the use and abuse of power, this is an accessibly and entertaining production to settle the issue once and for all.”
THE STAGE
“This is a strong cast and together with Faction's consistently refreshing and often daring approach makes this a must-see for anyone who thinks Shakespeare is boring.”
BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE
“[The] Faction’s production of The Tempest is highly recommended for its balance of quality, classical acting and its lightness of tone... a pioneering vision.”
EXTRA! EXTRA!
“Physical creativity and directorial flair: The Faction theatre company make the most of this in a highly physicalised ensemble approach with a healthy dose of cheeky irreverence... there is much to enjoy in this inventive and skilfully presented production. ****”
