A TRANSNATIONAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN ARTISTS FROM GREECE, LEBANON, LIBYA, SYRIA, TURKEY AND THE UK CREATING A BRAND NEW MULTILINGUAL PRODUCTION OF PERICLES BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE AND GEORGE WILKINS IN A NEW TRANSLATION BY THE COMPANY
Directors in each of these countries are running a rehearsal room in their home venue, using their own practice and cultural influences to stage the scenes of the text set in that country. The characters of the text are played by actors from their country of origin.
In this way the methodology for creating the production mirrors the narrative of the text – an odyssey that travels across the Mediterranean – producing a piece of theatre of richness, depth and authenticity, where each ‘episode’ has a distinct language and atmosphere, and providing a contemporary adventure at a time when cross-cultural exchange between British and Arabic counterparts, and co-operation across the Mediterranean and Middle East, is vital.
This is an ambitious, contemporary and innovative take on one of Shakespeare’s seldom performed works, creating a production of exceptional quality, alongside other cultural and artistic outcomes for audiences at international festivals in the countries of origin, around the Mediterranean and beyond.
In July 2019 in partnership with Stephen Joseph Theatre we will be rehearsing and workshopping the Lebanese unit which will be live streamed and shared across digital platforms.
